Winter Landscape (Xue Jing Tu) is an evocative masterpiece attributed to Xu Daoning, a pivotal figure in the Northern Song Dynasty. Originally a pharmacist who took up painting, Xu Daoning became one of the most celebrated followers of the Li Cheng tradition, eventually developing a "wilder" and more vigorous style that captured the raw power of the northern wilderness.

In terms of technique, the painting is a supreme example of "leaving the white" (liubai). To depict the deep snow covering the peaks and riverbanks, Xu Daoning did not use white pigment; instead, he applied dark ink washes to the sky and water, allowing the pristine silk or paper to represent the snow. This creates a high-contrast, luminous effect that perfectly simulates the blinding purity of a frozen world.

A signature element of Xu’s style visible in this work is his "gnarled pines" and weathered trees. Using sharp, crystalline brushwork, he rendered trees that seem to struggle against the cold, symbolizing the resilience of the scholar in harsh times. His mountains are built with "drag-and-stop" strokes, giving the rocky masses a heavy, weathered texture that feels both monumental and ancient.

From a philosophical dimension, Winter Landscape embodies the Taoist ideal of solitude. The vast, empty spaces and the silence of the snow-covered peaks reflect a world cleansed of worldly clamor. It invites the viewer into a state of meditative reclusion, where one can contemplate the "Great Way" (Tao) through the objective beauty of the natural seasons.

Historically, this work represents the peak of Shanshui maturity. It successfully bridges the gap between the meticulous realism of the early Song and the more expressive, rhythmic styles of the middle Song. Today, it remains a vital study for understanding the spiritual depth and atmospheric precision of classical Chinese landscape painting.
