Seeking Beauty in the Frost: Xia Gui’s "Seeking Plum Blossoms in the Snow" (Xue Ji Tan Mei Tu)

3

Seeking Plum Blossoms in the Snow (Xue Ji Tan Mei Tu) is an exquisite fan painting attributed to Xia Gui, one of the four masters of the Southern Song Dynasty. Along with Ma Yuan, Xia Gui co-founded the Ma-Xia School, which abandoned the towering, dense landscapes of the Northern Song in favor of a more lyrical, intimate, and atmospheric expression of the Jiangnan region.

The work is a quintessential example of the "One-corner Composition" (Xia Yijiao). Xia Gui masterfully concentrates the visual weight—a scholar on a bridge and gnarled trees—into a lower corner of the frame, leaving the rest to expansive negative space (liubai). This "emptiness" is not a void; rather, it represents the misty, snow-filled air, inviting the viewer to experience the silence and vastness of a winter morning.

Technically, the painting showcases Xia Gui’s signature "Axe-cut strokes" (fupi cun). Using a side-brush technique with decisive, vigorous motions, he creates the crystalline and jagged textures of the rocks and frozen banks. This rugged brushwork is balanced by the delicate ink washes used to suggest distant mountains, creating a profound sense of spatial depth and atmospheric moisture.

Thematic and philosophical depth is found in the motif of "Seeking Plum Blossoms." In literati culture, the plum blossom is one of the "Three Friends of Winter," symbolizing resilience, purity, and moral integrity as it blooms amidst the frost. The scholar, depicted in snow shoes (Xue Ji), represents the refined pursuit of beauty and truth in the face of adversity, a common sentiment among the Southern Song elite.

Historically, this work serves as a pinnacle of visual economy. Every stroke is intentional, and every empty space is resonant. Today, it remains a foundational study for understanding the spiritual depth and technical refinement of classical Chinese Shanshui art, directly influencing centuries of East Asian landscape traditions.
