Sheng Mou (盛懋), courtesy name Zizhao (子昭), was one of the most celebrated professional painters of the Yuan Dynasty. Unlike many of his contemporary "literati" painters who favored minimalist abstraction, Sheng Mou is renowned for his meticulous technique and refined elegance. His Landscape Hanging Scroll (山水轴) stands as a testament to his ability to blend the monumental tradition of the Five Dynasties and Northern Song with the delicate, poetic spirit of the Yuan era.

The composition of this work is characterized by "dense and lush" (茂密) scenery. Sheng Mou often employed a multi-layered perspective, building up majestic mountains that seem to pulse with energy. In the foreground, he typically places gnarled ancient trees and secluded pavilions, where scholars sit in contemplation. This structural complexity creates a "world within a world," inviting the viewer to mentally wander through the winding paths and hidden valleys.

Technically, Sheng Mou’s brushwork is exceptionally versatile.
