The Wind in Pines Among a Myriad Valleys (万壑松风图), created in 1124 by the legendary painter Li Tang (李唐), is hailed as one of the "Three Treasures" of the National Palace Museum in Taipei. This colossal hanging scroll represents a critical stylistic bridge between the Northern Song and Southern Song dynasties, marking the transition from the "monumental" to the "lyrical" landscape style.
Li Tang was a high-ranking official at the Imperial Painting Academy during the reign of Emperor Huizong. When the Northern Song fell, he fled south to Lin'an (modern Hangzhou), where he re-established the Academy. Wind in Pines was painted just before the fall of the North, capturing the architectural grandeur and masculine power of the Northern landscape tradition before the style shifted toward the mistier, more intimate scenes of the Southern Song.
Li Tang’s most revolutionary technical contribution was the invention of the "Axe-cut" stroke (大斧劈皴). In Wind in Pines, he uses a slanted brush to create broad, jagged marks that mimic the appearance of rocks split by an axe. This technique gives the mountains a crystalline texture and a sense of immense physical weight and geological permanence, departing from the softer "hemp-fiber" strokes of previous masters.
The composition is a symphonic arrangement of peaks, valleys, and dense forests. A massive, central mountain dominates the frame, seemingly pressing against the edges of the silk. In the foreground, gnarled pine trees—symbols of resilience and moral longevity—twist upward, their needles rendered with meticulous detail. Between the peaks, a rushing waterfall and a hidden stream suggest the audible roar of wind and water, engaging the viewer’s senses beyond the visual.
The painting embodies the Neo-Confucian pursuit of "investigating things to extend knowledge." It is a meditation on the immutable laws of nature (Li). The vastness of the mountains reflects the sublime order of the universe, while the sturdy pines represent the noble spirit of the literati official standing firm amidst political and social upheaval.
