Beyond the Print: The Art of Traditional Mounting at SinoInArt

8 Traditional mounting, Chinese scroll art, SinoInArt craftsmanship, Xu Ben Shu Shan Tu, handcrafted scrolls

A Chinese landscape painting is only truly finished once it has been mounted as a scroll. At SinoInArt, we treat the mounting of Xu Ben’s Shu Shan Tu with the same reverence as the painting process itself. Our 1:1 replicas are hand-mounted using techniques that have been passed down through generations of master craftsmen.

Traditional mounting is a complex, multi-step process involving the application of backing papers and silk borders using natural starch paste. This allows the scroll to remain flexible yet sturdy. Unlike machine-mounted prints, a hand-mounted scroll by SinoInArt will hang straight and true, without the distracting curls or waves associated with synthetic adhesives.

The silk we choose for the borders is specifically selected to harmonize with the monochrome ink of Shu Shan Tu. The subtle sheen of the silk provides a sophisticated frame that draws the eye inward, enhancing the depth of Xu Ben’s mountain vistas.

This process also ensures the preservation of the artwork. Traditional mounting is designed to be reversible, meaning the painting can be remounted in the future if necessary. This archival mindset is at the core of SinoInArt’s philosophy: we build our replicas to last for generations.

When you unroll a SinoInArt Shu Shan Tu, you feel the weight of the solid wood rollers and the smooth texture of the silk. It is a full sensory experience that honors the craftsmanship of the past while utilizing the precision of the present.
