Beyond the Frame: The Ancient Art of Mounting in SinoInArt’s Replicas

10 Traditional Chinese Mounting, Scroll Art, Ma Yuan, SinoInArt, Heritage Craftsmanship

A masterpiece like Ma Yuan’s "Dancing and Singing" deserves a frame that is as historical as the art itself. At SinoInArt, we do not use modern frames; instead, we employ the ancient art of "Biao Hua"—traditional Chinese scroll mounting.

Our mounting process is entirely manual. Master mounters apply layers of thin paper and natural starch paste to the back of the custom Xuan paper. This process is delicate and time-consuming, but it is the only way to ensure the scroll remains flexible, flat, and resistant to warping over time.

The silk borders of our scrolls are selected to match the imperial aesthetic of the Southern Song. We choose silk with a subtle luster that complements the ink tones of the "Tage Tu," creating a harmonious transition between the artwork and your wall.

The functionality of the scroll is also a key feature. Because it is traditionally mounted, it can be rolled for safe storage or unrolled for display without the risk of cracking. This portability was a hallmark of the ancient literati lifestyle, which we aim to bring to the modern collector.

When you hang a SinoInArt scroll, you are hanging a piece of handcrafted history. The weight of the wooden rollers and the texture of the silk are reminders of a time when art was a slow, deliberate, and beautiful process.
